Audemars Piguet x Swatch Royal Pop: The Pocket Watch Makes a Comeback in the Year's Most Unexpected Watch Release

When rumors of a new collaboration between Audemars Piguet and Swatch began circulating, most people expected yet another hype-driven sports watch for the wrist. Instead, Royal Pop breaks nearly every established rule. The result is eight colorful Bioceramic models inspired by both the Royal Oak and the Swatch POP from the 1980s — but in pocket watch format, with a mechanical movement, manual winding and a clear focus on playful engineering.

Audemars Piguet x Swatch – Royal Pop

Swatch and Audemars Piguet are taking the collaboration trend in an entirely new direction. Royal Pop is not just another limited release built on hype and queues outside boutiques. It is at the same time one of the most unexpected and technically interesting projects we've seen from Swatch in recent years.

The collection draws inspiration from two iconic worlds: the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak from 1972 and the Swatch POP from the 1980s. But instead of a traditional wristwatch, the brands have chosen to create a modern pocket watch — one that can be worn around the neck, kept in a pocket, attached to a bag, or used as a desk clock.

A Surprisingly Strong Movement

Perhaps the most interesting thing is that Swatch didn't settle for making a pure design object. Beneath the colorful exterior sits a new version of the SISTEM51 with manual winding, more than 90 hours of power reserve, and no fewer than 15 active patents. SISTEM51 is already one of Swatch's most fascinating projects, not least because it is the world's only fully automated Swiss Made mechanical movement. Here, it is combined with a Nivachron balance spring developed together with Audemars Piguet, as well as laser-calibrated precision straight from the factory.

Design-wise, the connection to the Royal Oak is unmistakable. The iconic octagonal case, the eight hexagonal screws and the Petite Tapisserie pattern on the dial are all present in Royal Pop. Swatch also reports that the case construction itself required an additional eight patents in order to recreate the Royal Oak's complex shapes in Bioceramic.

Multiple Models to Choose From

The collection consists of a total of eight models. Six are built in classic Lépine style with the crown placed at 12 o'clock, while two models use the Savonnette layout with the crown at 3 o'clock and a small seconds subdial.

The color palette is exactly as maximalist as the name suggests. The lineup ranges from the all-white HUIT BLANC with multicolored screws to the navy ORENJI HACHI and the perhaps most pop-art-inspired OTG ROZ in pink, yellow and teal.

Despite the playful expression, several thoughtful details have been incorporated. The cases use Swatch's Bioceramic material, sapphire crystal is fitted both front and back, and the hands and indices are treated with Super-LumiNova. One of the more unusual touches is that the mainspring barrel functions as a visual indicator of the power reserve. When the openings show gray, the watch needs winding, while gold indicates a full power reserve.

A Project That Shouldn't Work — But Does

Royal Pop feels in many ways like a project that shouldn't work. A colorful pocket watch from two Swiss giants sounds almost like a concept idea rather than a commercial release. But perhaps that is exactly why this collaboration feels more interesting than expected. Swatch and Audemars Piguet are not trying to make yet another "affordable Royal Oak" — they are creating something entirely of their own.

For collectors looking to take this unexpected piece beyond its original format, our friends at Wristbuddys are already developing dedicated straps for the Royal Pop, allowing owners to convert the pocket watch into a wristwatch and personalize it with premium FKM rubber and leather options.

The collection launches on May 16, 2026 in selected Swatch boutiques, with a limit of one piece per person per day — which likely means that the queues are already a given.
